Guilty plea over fatal crash

A 25-year-old man has pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death after crashing into a tree at the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour, killing one passenger.

Paul Smith was driving a Holden ute along Bacchus Marsh Road at about 2am on March 25 this year, when he lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and crashed into a tree, and then a shed.

22-year-old New Gisborne resident, Hayden Kloppers died at the scene.

Smith, from Kurunjang near Melton, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court for a brief committal mention on Tuesday August 1.

He was bailed to appear in Melbourne County Court in late January 2018.
